Abstract: | [Symbolic values of the names of Eugène Ionesco’s characters] Literary history and criticism must have acknowledged, without a doubt, Eugène Ionesco’s erudition. Unfortunately, this has not stopped the critique aimed at destructuring or partially ignoring the symbols, which play an important part in the great playwright’s works. Most of the first and last names of Ionesco’s characters are symbolic. Their symbolism can only be decoded by means of carefully analysing the aspects related to Ionesco’s dual identity. In the novel, in the short stories, but especially in the plays, the author’s intelligence and concern for details ennoble his characters with names that seem common at first, but which abound in symbols and autobiographic references. The characters of the Romanian playwright – who wrote mostly in French – are the result of the quest of the human being who always tries to get to know other people, in an attempt to decode a hierarchy of human values in order to define the being created to enjoy fully its freedom, a right highly appreciated by Ionesco. |
