Abstract: | [Sanskrit onyms in Modern Europe: Some examples from the first chapter of Bhagavadgītā] This paper focuses on the contrastive analysis of some onyms taken from the first chapter of Bhagavadgītā (e.g. Kṛṣṇa, Arjuna, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, Kurukṣetra) and their modern translations. The study aims at showing the difficulties encountered by translators in conveying the deepest meanings of these proper names. In most cases, translations cannot reproduce the original Sanskrit meaning of the names in modern languages, thus reducing the final results of the translating process to mere phonetic adaptations. |
