| Abstract: | [Sacred and profane in names of Romanian monasteries] The present paper aims at explaining the way in which names of monasteries function in Romanian public space. This means that, besides the official name, which is made public at the consecration of a religious establishment, monasteries are known with reference to features that distinguish them, especially in the cases when several such houses of worship have the same spiritual patron. The typology used is multifarious and, more often than not, novel. Based on existing sources – dictionaries, guides, maps and websites –, this study presents multiple types of uses of these names. It is highlighted that they have the characteristics of bynames, as they are, according to Ionescu Pérez (2007: 227), the ‘socialised product of the speakers’ free linguistic creativity’ [“produsul socializat al creativității lingvistice libere a vorbitorilor”] and define both the official and the unofficial system of names. |
