Abstract:This article introduces Gabriela Melinescu as a bilingual writer, in the transition from Romanian to Swedish, also as a translator and as an author who uses ancient myth in her creative thinking. The phenomenon of code-switching is followed in Gabriela Melinescu’s diary, in her prose and in her poetry, in an attempt to demonstrate the complexity of her style and her strategies in choosing such a variety of literary themes.
I have followed two kinds of multiculturalism in Gabriela Melinescu’ s work: the biographic element, reflecting radical changes, such as the exile from Romania to Sweden, the switch of the political regime, the benefit from liberty of expression, the integration in a foreign country and the cultural reference, that reflects the writer’ s variety of interests: mainly the Greek and Latin universe and the Hebrew culture, from which she borrows for herself, as one of the critics very well observed, appropriate lyrical masques.
