| Abstract: | Based on Himmelmann’s classification of demonstratives (1996), in which four universal discourse uses are identified, in the present paper we analyse several discourse functions of the situational / anaphoric acesta ‘this’ and acela ‘that’. The statistics made on six thousand words shows the high frequency of the anaphoric use and of the proximity demonstrative acesta ‘this’ compared to the situational use and to the distal demonstrative acela ‘that’. It can be inferred that the reduced frequency of acela ‘that’ compared to acesta ‘this’ is due to the fact that the distal demonstrative covers very few specific functions, which, in fact, are taken over by the proximity demonstrative. |
