Abstract:Among the francophone writers and Orientalists, the Russian born Isabelle Eberhardt (1877-1904) has a special place: brought up in Geneva and interested in exotic cultures, she wandered in the Maghrebian territory dressed up as an Arab knight, seeking for the mystic beauty of the desert. After becoming a Muslim, during her short life, she wrote stories in which she outspeaks her passion for Oriental culture, for Islam. She was fascinated by alterity (in terms of language, culture, religion) and her trips in this space gave her the opportunity to better build up her own identity, inspired by French writers such as Loti, interested in the recent discovery of Oriental spaces. This article deals with Isabelle Eberhardt’s vision of the Islamic world and with her identity, as one of the most peculiar orientalists of her time.
Key words:Orientalism, Islam, identity, alterity, francophone literature
