Abstract:The article aims at identifying the features of the communist regime, as it was built in Eastern Europe between the end of World War II and the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989. We have written a case study by taking Romania’s example. Thus we have identified that the pillars of this type of totalitarian regime were the necessity to put into prison, from the very beginning, all those whom the Communist Party would consider class enemies, as they were called, the activity of political police, vital to the Party, permanently surveying citizens, the phenomenon of denunciation, dissidence, the existence of Radio Europa Liberă (Free Europe) as the unique means by which the whole people, a prisoner in its own country, could learn the truth about the regime and about the emigrant’s condition. We have used written testimonies, published after 1990, for this research.
