Abstract:This article examines the circumstances which precede the emigration of the Russian writer Ivan Shmelev in 1922, proven by the correspondence he had written in 1921. The author experiences the tragedy of his 25-year old son’s loss, who had been arrested by the Bolsheviks and shot without trial. Shmelev alleviated the hardship of being separated from his son by the means of a litterary work full of religiosity, a writing meant to recompose the image of a deep and true Russia, „The Saint Russia”, which the writer dearly carried in his soul.
