In this first section, the author of the present study proposes an onomasiological perspective on the semantic relation between lat. pavimentum and rom. pământ. The study investigates the main explanations of the Romanian linguistics on the subject, and points the main aspects that were not clarified until now.
Evaluating, on onomasiological bases, the meanings of lat. pavimentum as they occur in Antiquitas Latina, the study concludes that, in this period, the word pavimentum has no relation with the road terminology. It also analyses the work of Vitruvius, De architectura, and specifies that this Latin author has never approached the road construction, so, in his work, pavimentum never had the meaning „road surface”, or „pavement”, in spite of the strong believes of the scientific world, since Bergier untill now. It also concludes that the word pavimentum does not have the meaning „earth” in Antiquitas Latina. The study will continue with the analysis of the pavimentum in Aetas Patrum, especially in Vulgata, to prove the existance of the meaning „earth, soil, ground” of the word pavimentum in the Late Vulgar Latin.
