Abstract:One can find, at the origin of the autobiographical writing, complex motivation: to recall the happy moments and live them through the writing; to tell about a model life; to share experiences with the others; to deal more easily with the difficult moments; to understand oneself better etc.
In this paper we tackle autobiography – more exactly the truth of a love which is impossible to transpose in writing – starting from ‘L’Usage de la Photo’, a book written by two authors. Protagonists of an unusual love story, Annie Ernaux and Marc Marie decide to write about their relationship starting from a series of photos witnessing their love struggles. The resulting book is a hybrid formed by photos and their comments written successively by the two protagonists. We intend to follow the manner in which the two authors make reference to the past, to each other and to the writing process equally. We will see in what way the same experience is reconstructed by the two lovers, who, even if animated by the desire to be objective and to discover the truth, will inevitably produce different, reconstructed and subjective versions of their common past.
