Abstract: | Freed from the influence of the ’48 generation militancy which had predominantly developed the idea of gypsy slaves liberation for the 19th century, the Romanian prose of the 20th century creates a gypsy character viable from a literary point of view. Starting from Mircea Eliade’s La Ţigănci and Vasile Voiculescu’s Sakuntala, going through Ion Agârbiceanu’s Faraonii and Zaharia Stancu’s Şatra and summing up with Leonid Arcade’s Poveste cu ţigani, the authors endow with complexity and consistency a character that had been known only through the lens given by the works presenting the gypsy slave or through the disorganised crowd in Ţiganiada. |
