Abstract: | The presence and the absence of the fantastic in I.L.Caragiale’s work was largely discussed in the volume entitled “Schiţe nouă“, published in 1910; but the realistic observer (as the author had proven to be in the comedies) did not exclude the fantastic element (sometimes even with a magical character) even beginning with 1898, the year he published the short story La hanul lui Mînjoală. Most of the times the critics, including first Ibrăileanu, then Zarifopol and P. Constantinescu, supported the idea of a limited amount of fantastic in Caragiale’s stories. When referring to Tzvetan Todorov’s work “The Fantastic: A Structural Approach to a Literary Genre” one can be offered a clearer comprehension of the nature of Caragiale’s short stories; once again starting from the above work, our study also means to be an analysis of Eminescu’s fantastic prose, definitely of a different character compared to that of Caragiale. |
