Abstract:How much is a translator able to render the main sociolinguistic features of the source text into the target one, when the culture of departure is deeply different from the culture of arrival? This is the question analyzed in our paper, focusing on Serge Quadruppani’s translation of two novels, La Forme de l’eau and Chien de faïence, by Andrea Camilleri who, with his Inspector Montalbano’s enquiries, is considered a new literary case. Camilleri’s language is based upon a mixture between Italian and Sicilian dialect and could be defined as an idiolect mirroring not only Sicilian vocabulary and syntax, but also traditions and mentality which can hardly find equivalences in French.
Key words:idiolect, sociolinguistic features, mixture, equivalence, idiolect mirroring
Language: French
