Abstract:For quite some time now, post-colonial texts have been compared to translations almost as a matter of course. The analogy is not only used to account for the transposition of cultural references, but also for that of linguistic elements. Still, as yet, literary scholars never seem to have resorted to the concept of self-translation for the analysis of the transcanonical writing of such authors. It is not my intention to force an artificial expansion of the current, rather limited corpus of self-translations in literary studies, but there appear to be interesting similarities between the post-colonial writer and the self-translator, and these are worth exploring.
