Abstract: | The author aims at analyzing and comparing the history of two participal forms inherited from Latin – înţelept ‘understand’ (the participle of the verb intelligo, -ĕre) and mort ‘die’ (the participle of the verb mŏrĭor, mŏri, mortŭus sum). In the transition from Latin to Romanian, these participles lost the inflectional connection to the corresponding verbs, which led to their exclusively adjectival usage. In Romanian, the aforementioned verbs have developed a complete paradigm and created regular analogical participle forms (înţeles / înţelegut and murit). The newly created participles came to differentiate from the primary adjectival participles: înţeles / înţelegut vs. înţelept, murit vs. mort. The author insists on the usage and relationship between the participal forms (inherited and analogical) in the 16th century texts. |
