| Abstract: | I. The colloquial word şpagă ‘bribe’ is a loanword from the (obsolete) Alb. shpagë ‘amends, damage compensation, reward, pay’, borrowed at the beginning of the 19th century, through the Albanian mecenaries having served in the Wallachian and Moldavian military police forces. II. The colloquial synonym şperţ ‘bribe’ is a loanword from Germ. Sperrzoll ‘prohibitive customs duties’, borrowed during the ‘customs war’ unleashed between 1886 and 1891 by the Austro-Hungarian Empire against Romania. |
