Abstract:
  • This article intends to present some lexical-semantical features of the present Romanian religious language. The frequency of archaisms, in general, and of semantical ones, in particular, in the religious text is deeply connected to the dogmatism of this type of text. The preservation of archaic forms is seen as a guarantee of the acurate undoubtfully transmission of the sacred message.
Our analysis is meant to follow especially phenomena that are different in their appearance or frequency from present Romanian language and the ones which refer to a more ancient phase of our literary language. The examples were drawn from biblical texts, worship books (Liturgical Book/Liturghier), from Instruction in Christian-Ortodoxe Faith/Învăţătura de credinţă creştină ortodoxă and from a book meant for personalised praying.
Many of these archaic meanings can be found into the present popular/regional language (gatit/prepared, a savarsi/to officiate, socotinţă/point of view, etc.). Some lexemes, not too many, that had different sense in the ancient language if compared to the present one: law/faith, language/people were substituted, in order to avoid confusions regarding the significance held by the sacred text.
