Abstract:The linguistic examples presented in this contribution span a long period of time from prehistory to the present day. The typological examples show language continuums across language borders to be followed by conceptual continuums going back to prehistory. With regard to modern times I shall deal with state borders gradually enforcing splits of a former dialect continuum. While this usually takes a rather long time to develop, there are also cases where such changes were brought about surprisingly abruptly, usually due to political pressure. My examples are taken from a variety of sources, such as the Atlas Linguarum Europae, the Atlas Linguarum Fennicarum, Wenker’s Sprachatlas des Deutschen Reichs, British linguistic data and data from other languages.
