| Abstract: | This text deals with the problem of linguistic terminology and terminography, which has become increasingly important within theoretical linguistics. First, a number of definitions (‘terminology’, ‘vocabulary’, ‘metalanguage’, ‘metasemiotics’) are presented, which set the methodological frame for a study of the procedures, and of the constraints and requirements to be observed when defining technical linguistic terms. Special attention is then paid to the various aspects of historical, cultural, epistemological and ideological ‘ladenness’ of linguistic terms, and to the integration of terminology within a comprehensive metalanguage. The central part of the paper deals with the problem of the calibration of terms, and with the principles and conventions to be respected in the comparative (and contrastive) endeavour of terminological calibration. |
