Abstract: | [An analysis of the nonstandard uses of indexicals. The direct reference theory vs the descriptive theory] This paper presents one of the most important debates in the field of philosophy of language with respect to the class of indexicals, namely establishing if the semantic contribution of these expressions consists of individuals or rather descriptive contents. Two influential approaches, the theory of direct reference and the descriptive theory, will be described and analyzed based on a material consisting of utterances in which indexicals have metonymic or generic readings in an attempt to provide a well-reasoned argument in favor of one or the other. |
