Abstract: | Praying is usually considered an individual act which creates a link between human beings and God. In the first Romanian book, namely The Sermons of Varlaam (1643), there are provided two different ways of achieving this religious act. The empirical data of our paper are the two prayers performed by a Pharisee and a tax collector. Our analysis will not focus on the Biblical text (Luke 18:9-14), but, on the reinterpretation of this famous parable in the 17th century Romanian text. Having as theoretical background, A.J. Greimas’s semiotic square and Joseph Courtés’s discursive means of representing subjects, we will show the semiotic means of achieving one’s (social) identity through the process of negation. The three discursive relations (contradiction, contrariety and implication) established between the Pharisee and the tax collector constitute the prototypical framework of going beyond the private act of praying. |
