Abstract:[Alternative ethnonyms of Romanians. Remarks of terminological sociology]
The term Vlach is the best known alternative ethnonym for the Romanians, the only one who has gained widespread equivalence. A careful analysis of the spread of this ethnonym and its family of words shows that we are dealing with a terminological creation within the Roman-Byzantine society. However, the assumption that this term should be etymologically associated with Celtic ethnonym Volsci is unsustainable, also because the term Volsci disappeared from circulation for at least half a millennium before the emergence of ethno-linguistic reality of the Vlachs.
Key words:
  • etnonime, români, vlahi, olahi/ulaqi, ulichi, context extrafilologic
  • ethnonims, Romanians, Vlachs, Olachs/Ulaks, Ulichians, extraphilological context
