Abstract:The awareness of the need for a constant and general language formation in German at German schools has now established itself, cf. respective curricula. How urgently yet a further development of a language competency of German university students is to be supported – namely with regard to their meta knowledge and reflection of language as well as linguistic competence and, in particular, the language-based competence to successfully complete a degree’s program at a German university at all – remains largely unconsidered. This paper aims to stimulate the discourse of how to deal with language deficits and growing heterogeneity of German university students on the basis of a snapshot of the practice of teaching Applied German Linguistics at a German university.
