Abstract:In his paper, “A Language of the Imaginary”, Dumitru-Mircea Buda deals with the problems of language hybridization in Mircea Cartarescu's famous postmodernist epic “Levantul” (“The Levant”), written in the aftermath of communism and published immediately after the revolution of 1989. Initially conceived as a subtextual political protest against Ceausescu's dictatorial regime, the epic developed into a spectacular parade of languages, styles and themes from the history of Romanian poetry, masterly performed with irony and humor but undermined by a somehow tragic feeling of the relativity and futility in human existence. A fragment from a book entitled “The Virtual Reality in Poetry”, Dumitru-Mircea Buda's approach follows and attempts to interpret the distorted dynamics of the epic's language, while at the same time setting it in connection with the astonishing imagery of the text. Language hybridization, textual centres of power, invented dialects, register-shifting, fractalic principles of imaginary pulsation, frame-rating techniques are all elements of a complex project of virtualizing the literary language. A project carried out with total transparency but nevertheless seductive for the reader.
