Abstract:This article aims to emphasize a series of aspects related to the discursive and stylistic qualities of MS. 45, the first integral translation of the Old Testament in Romanian, produced by the notable scholar Nicolae Spatarul Milescu in Constantinople (1661-1664), and based on the Frankfurt edition (1597) of the Greek Septuagint. Particular attention will be devoted to analysing modalities of speech, the use of deictic words, as well as anaphoras. I will argue that these phenomena shed light on the structural-functional potentialities of the Romanian language’s mid-17th century syntax, which in successfully accommodating a Biblical text attested its abilities to satisfactorily transfer meaning and scope from the original sources into the local vernacular.
