Abstract:The author’s aim is to study the possible translation equivalents of the French past gerund, a construction lacking an equivalent in Romanian. The gerund represents a secondary predicate, denoting a finished action, seen – in itself or as resulting from it – as associated with, or integrated in the main predicate. There are two possible solutions for its translation: either by using the gerund, when the target language permits it without any logical or semantic distortions (though with implicit terminative meaning), or by using adverbial subordinate clauses (or sometimes prepositional adverbials) depending on the interpretation imposed by the context.
Key words:perfect gerund, linked vs detached construction, semantic and pragmatic interpretation, semantic effects, Romanian equivalents, translation by paraphrasing
Language: French
