| Abstract: | Greek and Latin elements are essential in forming scientific terminology. Mathematics is an area where one can easily notice the etymons of Latin origin and the way in which they have evolved in different languages. The analysis aims at presenting twelve Latin verbs from which various mathematical terms were formed and how the meaning of the etymon is reflected in definitions. Direct etymology shows that the Romanian language took over most mathematical terms from French and scientific Latin. Other Romance or non- Romance languages also record similar forms of mathematical terms. |
