Abstract:
  • In this paper, we start from the assumption that whereas concrete terms are prototypical categories, abstract terms are non-prototypical categories, requiring a different type of coherent conceptual organization with a higher degree of abstractness. Starting from the fact that unlike the concrete categories, the abstract categories can no longer be referred to as ‘best examples’, instead, they can be described by means of Idealized Cognitive Models, where degrees of abstractness are higher, we are going to provide an analysis of emotions across cultures, starting from the model described by Wierzbicka (1990). The aim of this analysis is to perform a contrastive study focusing on both cultural diversity and ‘emotional universals’ in English and Romanian, as well as to point out its consequences for foreign language teaching and learning.
Key words:
  • prototypie – catégorisation - Modèles cognitifs idéalisés - catégories abstraites
  • prototypicality – categorisation - Idealized Cognitive Models - abstract categories
