For the citizens of Romania, the actual accession to the European Union, starting from 2007, has determined both a reconfiguration of their own identity and a shift of perspective on what being European means. This paper intends to investigate the manner in which this dialectic process was reflected in both the pre- and post-integration discourse of the Romanian media. Methodologically, our manner of approach will be based mainly on the instruments of Cognitive Linguistics (CL), chiefly on the Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT), as well as on the instruments of Comparative Imagology (CI). Concretely, we intend to derive, through a systematic analysis of the linguistic metaphors (LM) prevailing in the current Romanian press, the prominent conceptual metaphors (CM) that determine presently the construction of the identity concepts of “Romanian” and “European” in the collective Romanian mentality.
