Abstract:We can say that, in 1940, in the months preceding and following the Vienna Dictate, there was not a unified and coherent Hungarian perspective on Romanian art in Transylvania. Nevertheless, the opinions of art historians weren’t foreign to the government’s revisionist policy. In the polemical and scientific writings of Hungarian and Romanian scholars, the Transylvanian issue became at the time a subject of international interest. Far from considering the art historian a mere propagandist of the government’s official policy, we can nevertheless note that the pressure of political events and the obsessions trigerred by war influenced the topics in discussion/debate and the way in which art history was written.
