Abstract: | One can assert that for both Coriolan Petranu and Aurel Cosma the art of the Romanians from Transylvania and Banat was defined by the regional geography, and it was of peasant origin and character. The two art historians did not make the difference between the art and the folk art as regards their value because they intended to identify the Romanians’ art in comparison with that of the other cohabiting nationalities. The two art historians examined the artistic patrimony in the perspective of nationalism specific to the Romanians from the former Austro-Hungarian Empire. In the same time it can be stated that both Petranu and Cosma resorted to a mannerist discourse which produced some evasive interpretations. They also appealed to a double or parallel discourse which oscillated freely from the regional convictions to the Pan-Romanian ones. |
