Abstract: | A rich source of information documenting the monastic life of the first Chrisian centuries, the Spiritual Meadow (the Leimonarion) provides details that illustrate the authenticity of the holy life led by the monks in the Eastern Mediterranean basin (Egypt, Palestine, Sinai). These monk’s spiritual doctrine is manifested especially in their deeds. John Moschus presents the outward life of the monks in order to reveal their inner one, their souls, their concerns, their struggle, their virtues: «The more one suffers outwardly, the more he blossoms inwardly». Poverty, obedience, charity, detachment from material goods, frugality of food and drink, fasting, manual labor accompany this life at once harsh and mysterious. To these monks, asceticism is also communion. The essential is not to do this or that, but to do what God Himself suggests or commands to us, through His representative. Then the respective deed represents a voluntary offering and, therefore, the monk performs spiritual work. The pages of the Spiritual Meadow are rosary beads of soul edification. |
