Abstract:Borrowability and use of loanwords are topics that have been addressed by various fields of linguistics (especially historical linguistics and contact linguistics). Unfortunately, traditional studies in lexical semantics fall short when it comes to analysing the evolution of loanwords. In this paper, I will argue that recent trends in cognitive grammar (including usage-based models of language) can provide a better understanding of the trajectories of semantic change in loanwords. Finally, I will discuss some methodological issues related to research design in the emerging field of cognitive sociolexicology.
