This paper intends to identify the concepts of identity and alterity in Eminescu’s Sonnet V, which proves to be a resourceful search since alterity manifests here as a consequence of the passage of time upon one single identity (the poetic ego’s childhood is alterity of the mature self), and then to analyse the way in which these two concepts are rendered into English in two versions.
