Abstract: | In 1905 Sextil Puşcariu published his Etymologisches Wörterbuch der rumänischen Sprache, I. Lateinisches Element mit Berücksichtigung aller romanischen Sprachen (= EWRS), an etymological dictionary of the Latin component of the Rumanian language. The perspective adopted by the author is a comparative-reconstructionist one. The lexical documentation presented in order to offer an historical explanation of the Rumanian forms covers the full range of Romance language. The etymological reference layer is spoken (or ‘Vulgar’) Latin, a fact which accounts for the large number of reconstructed etyma. As shown by the metalexicographical analysis presented here the EWRS reflects the main evolutions in general and Romance linguistics at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century: this is evidenced by the integration of dialect forms not only from the Rumanian linguistic area, but also from various domains within the Romania. In addition the attention paid to semantic evolution and to the lexical distribution within conceptual fields testifies to the impact of the then recently made advances in semantics and in onomasiology. |
