| Abstract: | This paper explores the perpetual phenomenon of lexical interference seen in the context of a new dimension of multilingualism. In today’s Europe many foreign language learners are already bilingual or multilingual. This is the case also for many Romanian learners of German as a foreign language who are prone to the influence of English, usually as their first foreign language. This situation is fairly new in dealing with lexical influences: for many years it was mainly the mother tongue of the learner that constituted a source of lexical interference. Today one has to take English into account as a language exercising a double pressure on the newly acquired German vocabulary of the foreign speaker: a direct pressure due to the exposure of many learners to English and an indirect pressure caused by the standardization and spreading of Eurospeak within the EU. Given these new influences I ask questions and hope to provide answers aiming at ensuring a certain precision and therefore authentic competence in German vocabulary acquisition. |
