Abstract: | The present study aims to advance a comparative perspective on Oxford English Dictionary (OED1) and its Romanian counterpart, Dicţionarul Academiei (DA). Both dictionaries benefitted from the philological develpoments of their time and both were regarded as works of lexicographical excellence as well as great patriotic merit. Their main objectives were remarkably similar: descriptivism and objectivity in recording the words of the language, comprehensiveness to the greatest possible degree and historical treatment of every word. As work on each dictionary proceeded, J. Murray and S. Puşcariu were confronted with considerable challenges. However, both OED and DA lived up to their reputation of ”historical monuments” and (as reverent R. Trench had envisaged) enabled their readers to contemplate the history of their respective nations from the point of view of language. |
