Abstract:
Few translators have been able to penetrate the poetic, multi-layered, and dense Proustian text, to carry out the project, and to be left with a generic sense of wonder, capable of mobilising the spirit infinitely. Irina Mavrodin was one such translator. The difficulty in reading, interpreting and, finally, translating the Proustian prose resides in the fact that that unique syntactic sequence has its own logic, its own grammar, which only its creator fully understood. The translator’s monumental task is to enter the author’s mind and the subtleties of a primarily self-reflexive mechanism, and to write about this act.
