| Abstract: | The article aims at analyzing how euphemisms and/or the phenomenon of euphemy are defined in general linguistics. The phenomenon of euphemy is understood in a broad and a different way by various linguists. Despite the fact that there are multiple and consistent works on euphemisms, researchers, however, have not reached a consensus concerning all the aspects of euphemy. We shall consider, first of all, the criteria for the delimitation of euphemisms from non-euphemisms and we shall point out their basic characteristics. |
