Abstract:The present paper sets out to catalogue and study the significance and symbolism of the terms which designate colour in the works of Ovid. Being part of a greater study dedicated to this topic, the following pages will focus on the love poetry, trying to compare, on one hand, this poetry (represented by Ars amandi and Amores) to Fasti and to the poetry of the exile, and on the other hand, the coloristics of Amores to the one of Ars amandi. The paper also makes a statistics on the names of colours, studying the ‘objects’ which benefit from a chromatic description, but first of all it keeps track of the quantitative distribution of this vocabulary in the various ovidian poems being analysed, in search of an explanation for this substantially different distribution.
Key words:Ovid, love poetry, symbolism of colours, quantitative distribution
