Abstract:[Manifestations of L1 attrition in seven Romanian expats – a view from error analysis.]
This paper focuses on mother tongue (L1) attrition and its manifestations in seven Romanian expats. The research is based on error analysis and investigates a corpus of authentic materials written by individuals who were born and educated in Romania until a certain age and who have been living abroad for 7 to 40 years. All of them are currently using Romanian only in certain types of interactions as their adoptive countries have other official languages. The data source for the research is chiefly a corpus of letters and e-mails written by the subjects between 2008 and 2015. The most important issue to relate is that the investigation confirms the assumption that there is a systematic correlation between the L1 and the L2 competence which is linked to the level of education, that the L2 interference does not explain all the L1 errors and that syntax and receptive skills are more resistant to attrition than morphology, semantics and expressive skills.
Key words:first language (L1), second language (L2), L1 attrition, L1 retention, bilingualism, linguistic loyalty, corpus analysis, error analysis
