Abstract:[Misoginy and gender blurring in Caragiale’s works]
The article discusses the development of a literature course that has tackled the issue of Caragiale’s misogyny. After presenting evidence for and against, conflicting conclusions have been reached. Judged by the criteria of his times, Caragiale was not a misogynist because he did not hate women. On the other hand, if judged by contemporary criteria pertaining to the issue, one could argue for the author’s misogyny. This, however, is acceptable only if Caragiale is proven as a supporter of the period’s standards related to women’s social position.
Key words:
  • misoginism, I. L. Caragiale, poziţia socială a femeii, gen gramatical
  • misoginy, I. L. Caragiale, women’s social position, grammatical gender
