Abstract:Ballard affirms : « le traducteur est en communication avec deux mondes et deux façons de dire le monde » (2004 : 29). In our opinion he is situated between two or several cultures. And thus he often has to deal with words firmly-rooted in the source reality, without any correspondent in the target language. An exemple is the term « quinquet » used in the beginning of the second part of Madame Bovary. A culture-specific item that contains a plurality of connotations. A complex word translated in different ways by the Romanian translators. In this article we are thinking to study the choises present in the seven Romanian versions of Flaubert’s masterpiece in order to display the relation between the linguistic and the cultural complexity of a text.
Key words:translation, cultureme, cultural complexity, linguistic complexity, Madame Bovary
