Abstract: | The vocabulary of English is heterogeneous and diversified. The Romans, the Scandinavian invaders, the Norman French conquerors, the prestige of the ancient Latin and classical Greek, contacts in multilingual situations have contributed a lot to the English vocabulary. French was one of the languages that had a significant influence on English throughout its linguistic development. The present article explores briefly the French influence on the vocabulary of English. |
