Abstract:[Some observations on the syntactic phrase ce se/să (d)zice]
The paper aims to describe the syntactic phrase ce se/să (d)zice (‘that is to say’), in old Romanian (from the 16th to the 18th century) and argue that, in some cases it can be considered an appositive marker (such as adecă [‘that is to say’] or anume [‘namely’]). The phrase is, sometimes, invariable, when it inserts plural nouns, or it can introduce appositions where the anchor’s Genitive/Dative morphems and/or its preposition are reduplicated. An important argument in this case is also the semantic and pragmatic role of the appositional constructions introduced by ce se/să (d)zice; it can mark the identifying appositions, translations, or auto-corrections of the speaker. However, from our point of view, the structure ce se/să (d)zice does not continue the process of grammaticalization (as well as adică and anume).
