Abstract:[Subjunctive in Romanian and its equivalents in Croatian]
Considering that the Croatian language does not possess the subjunctive mood, our paper intends to analyse the ways how this mood is expressed in Croatian, starting from the values and the use of subjunctive in main and subordinate clauses.
Given that the subjunctive mood is a mood of subordination to another verb, in the case when the regent verb and the subordinated verb have the same subject, the Romanian language prefers the use of subjunctive, as it is the case in some Balkan languages. In such a situation, however, the Croatian language uses the infinitive, similar to other European languages like French, Italian and English.
Regarding the relation indicative - subjunctive in Romanian, there are cases when after certain verbs we can have forms of subjunctive (when the expressed situation is perceived as a possibility), but we can have also forms of indicative (when the expressed situation is perceived as real). In the Croatian language, these verbs are generally followed by the structure conjunction da + a time of the indicative. Considering that the conjunction da in Croatian is equivalent to both Romanian conjunctions and , we will observe the ways in which the Croatian language expresses various values of the subjunctive.
