Abstract:[Focus and pronominal binding: an analysis of French and Romanian complex pronouns]
This paper analyzes the interpretation of complex pronouns in French (e.g. ‘lui-même’) and Romanian (e.g. ‘el însuşi’). Complex pronouns appear to be anaphors (i.e. they require an antecedent), but they do not have a restricted binding domain (thus violating Chomsky’s Binding Theory). Their peculiar behaviour is explained in terms of Rooth’s 1985, 1992 analysis of focus. A localist view of the grammar/ pragmatics interface is adopted (cf. Chierchia et al. 2012).
Key words:complex pronouns, binding, contrastive focus, French, Romanian
Language: French
