Abstract:Starting from the Aristotle’s concept of syllogism, regarded as a logical statement founded on a deductive way of judgement in order to get to a conclusion, we consider that the very same reasoning can be successfully appied in other areas of human knowledge. Mircea Manolescu, prominent jurist between the two world wars, applied this theory of syllogistic judgement as form of metacognition to the legal decision-making process, more precisely to how a judge grounts his decision in a trial. By extrapolation, the same reasoning can be apposed in medical making-decision by selecting a way of action, in the context of anamnesis, health diagnosis and treatment. Physicians, as well as judges, ought to have strong scaffolding in setting a medical decision. Just like in the case of a syllogism, the health care professional starts from a major premise (general signs and symptoms of a disease), followed by a minor premise (specific symptoms exhibited by the patient) and reaching a conclusion (in the physician’s case establishing the diagnosis followed by instituting treatment).
