| Abstract: | Terminology can be defined as an activity (a set of practices and methods used for the collection, description and presentation of terms), a theory (the set of premises, arguments and conclusions needed to explain the relationship between concepts and terms), or the vocabulary of a specialized field. Depending on its degree of specialization or scientificity, we can say that there are several types of terminology, namely: the scientific terminology, the technical terminology and the terminology of professions or crafts. The three terminological types are not entirely distinct from one another, the words moving from one category to another, as the domain to which they belong develops and diversifies. What makes maritime terminology special is that it seems to have something in common with all of the above mentioned types of terminology. Therefore, if we were to enclose maritime terminology in one of the three groups, we would note that it includes a theoretical part, which may be associated with the scientific vocabulary, and an applied part, which, depending on the degree of development of the techniques and of the technologies used, can belong either to the technical vocabulary or to the professional vocabulary. |
