Abstract:When it is not used in enunciation, the demonstrative determinative can identify a reader mentioned either in the previous context (the anaphora) or in the following one, (the cataphora). What the present article had in view is to make a general presentation of the cataphora. Is resides in the semantic reference to an element which appears in the following text. Such a proceeding allows us to point out the cataphoric behaviour of the demonstrative determinative in order to identify that reader from the next context.
The examples illustrating the situations when the demonstrative determinative can be used as a cataphora are selected from Jean de La Fontaine’s Fables.
Key words:cataphora, context, demonstrative, use, reader
